Tarquin’s Gin History
At 23 years old, Tarquin, a classically trained chef, left his desk job in London to pursue his passion for creating. Teaming up with his sister Athene, he embarked on the ambitious mission of establishing the first Cornish distillery in over a century. With a copper pot still, a suitcase full of unique botanicals, and a vision, Tarquin returned to the West Country to create what would become the World’s Best Gin.
Over the next year, Tarquin experimented tirelessly with botanicals, eventually selecting 12 that included roots, spices, nuts, seeds, fruits, and flowers. The precise gin recipe was locked away, and production began with a small second-hand Portuguese alembic copper pot still named Tamara. The process was traditional and hands-on, with no machines or automation, reflecting Tarquin’s commitment to authenticity.
The gin production started, and the first batch was meticulously handcrafted and sold to the Gurnard Head Hotel in St. Ives, Cornwall, marking the official launch of Southwestern Distillery.
Two months later, Tarquin introduced ‘Cornish Pastis,’ the first-ever commercially distilled Pastis in the UK. Within the first year, Southwestern Distillery received recognition with a Gold medal for the Pastis and the Gin at prestigious international spirits awards.
In the following years, Southwestern Distillery continued to win Gold and Double Gold medals, and the distillery expanded to meet growing demand with the addition of more copper pot stills. Tarquin’s dedication to crafting exceptional spirits and maintaining authenticity remained at the core of his operation, solidifying the brand’s place on the craft-spirits map.
